Where did you get your pet from? I ADOPTED HIM FROM THE EAST SHELTER ON RIO SALADO What is your dog's name? SARGE What is your dog's breed? SARGE IS AN ANATOLIAN SHEPHERD MIX (PREDOMINANT KENGAL) What is your dog’s primary color(s)? TAN AND BLACK WITH A BLACK MUZZLE Is your dog spayed, neutered, or intact? NEUTERED How old is your pet? APPROXIMATELY 3 YEARS OLD How long have you owned this pet? I RESCUED HIM IN DECEMBER 2023 Are you the legal owner of this pet? If Other, please explain. YES Is your pet microchipped? YES If so, is the microchip registered with you as the owner? If other, please explain. YES Is your pet potty trained? YES, HOWEVER, HE WASN'T NEUTERED UNTIL HE WAS 2 YEARS OLD SO HE WILL MARK HIS TERRITORY WHEN ANOTHER DOG IS PRESENT. Does your pet walk on a leash? YES Does your pet know any obedience/tricks? If so, what obedience/tricks do they know? SIT, LAY DOWN, SHAKE (BOTH HANDS), UP, IGNORE Was your pet kept inside, outside, or both? BOTH If inside, where was your pet kept? Crate, bedroom, free to roam, etc. FREE TO ROAM, HAD TO BLOCK OFF KITCHEN BECAUSE HE LIKES TO EAT PAPER TOWELS AND HE STEALS BREAD. If outside, what kind of fencing do you have, and did it contain the pet? BLOCK WALL. YES, BUT HE CAN OPEN LATCHES, DOORS, AND SLIDING GLASS DOORS (VERY SMART). HE WILL NTO TYPICALLY JUMP FENCES OR WALLS. Does your dog have any destructive behaviors or get nervous when left alone? If so, describe what s/he does and when. HE HAS SOME SEPARATION ANXIETY AND HOWLS WHEN LEFT ALONE. Has your pet been around any other people and/or children? If so, how would you describe your pet's behavior towards other people/children? HE IS VERY SWEET TO OTHER PEOPLE AND CHILDREN. HE LIKES TO JUMP UP AND HUG BUT DOESN'T PUSH OFF HE JUST COMES UP ON HIS HIND LEGS. I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH HIM TO STOP BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH A BIG DOG DOING IT EVEN IF HE JUST WANTS TO HUG THEM. Does your pet have any signs of aggression like growling, curling their lips, or lunging around people, food, toys, or bones? If so, please describe the situation. SARGE DISPLAYS LEASH AGGRESSION, HOWEVER WHEN UNLEASHED HE IS VERY PLAYFUL. HE HASN'T BEEN SOCILIZED A LOT BUT WHEN HE IS NOT LEASHED HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FRIENDLY. NOTE: THIS BREED IS KNOWN TO RESPOND TO AGGRESSION WITH AGGRESSION SO IF HE FEELS LIKE HE IS BEING ATTACKED HE WILL RESPOND DEFENSIVELY. ALSO, HE IS PRTECTIVE OF FOOD HE STEALS SO I FOUND IT HELPFUL TO DISTRACT HIM BY CALLING HIM TO GET A TREAT AND WHILE HE IS DISTRACTED I COULD TAKE BACK WHAT HE HAD THAT HE WAS PROTECTING. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TRYING TO TAKE ANYTHING FROM HIM ANY OTHER WAY. HE WAS A STRAY BEFORE I GOT HIM. HE DOESN'T ACT PROTECTIVE WITH HIS FOOD AND TAKES TREATS VERY GENTLY. Has your pet bitten anyone prior to the last 10 days? If so, please describe the situation(s) in detail. NO Has your dog been around other animals? If so, what kind of animals? How would you describe their interaction with other animals? SARGE HAS BEEN AROUND A FEW DOGS AND CATS. LIKES TO CHASE CATS. Has your dog killed any animals? If so, please provide the details. NO Has your dog been diagnosed with any medical condition? If yes, please provide details. NO Is your pet currently on any medication? If yes, please provide details. NO Is there any additional information you would like to provide about your pet? E.g. favorite toy, favorite treat, quirks, fears, etc. SARGE LOVES TO PLAY WITH WILL FETCH (WE WERE WORKING ON THE RETURN). HE LOVES TO SNUGGLE WHEN HE FEELS SAFE AND IS A GREAT PROTECTOR. HIS BREED IS A WORKING DOG HOWEVER, I DO NOT KNOW IF HE HAS ANY FARM EXPERIENCE. HE IS EXTREMELY LOYAL AND LOVING. HE IS A FANTASTIC GUARD DOG AND WILL PROTECT HIS SPACE AND HIS PEOPLE. HE RESPONDS WELL TO POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT HOWEVER, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT OUTSIDE OF LOUDLY TELLING HIM NO. I WOULD RECOMMENT TO ANYONE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMON CHARACTERISTICS WITH THIS BREED BECAUSE HE IS TRULY A WONDERFUL DOG.

5/23/2025 Dog was at front of kennel; relaxed body; offered treat not interested; allowed easy leashing; exited kennel; walked with moderate pull to a yard close to kennel; in yard dog explored; offered treats not interested; continued exploring; jumped up at assistant handler; dog got down quickly when assistant handler turned to side; explored; a dog was being walked in the distant; dog quickly approached yard fence; alarm barking; tail flagged; unable to redirect attention; once the dog was out of sight this dog settled. Handlers would toss tennis balls dog would chase but not pick up. More interested in yard. Another dog walked by this dog ran over to yard fence; alarm barking; tail flagged; unable to redirect attention; ran along perimeter of fence; took a while to settle once dog was out of sight. Dog continued exploring. Allowed handler to approach and pet; lip licked; allowed handler to pick leash up; exited yard; approaching kennel; dog pulled back hard; tried pulling in opposite direction; thrashed briefly; offered treat into kennel; not interested; entered nearby yard again. Waited in yard while assistant handler went to unlock back kennel door. Exited yard and walked to outer portion of kennel. Handler quickly walked towards kennel and handler quickly walked into kennel using light leash pressure dog walked in. Allowed leash removal.
5/23/2025 Dog at front of kennel upon approach, loose body, tail wagging, did not take treats. Allowed leashing, walked out of kennel and into play yard willingly (play yard located directly next to kennel). Explored yard, loose body, tail wagging, allowed petting, some solicitation of petting (rubbing up & leaning), did not take treats, would chase a squeeked ball but did not pick up. Jumped on handler once, handler turned to side, dog immediately got off without putting any weight on the handler. Twice a dog walked in view of the yard, Sarge would run up to the fence, become stiff, have erect ears and tail, barked; only able to redirect verbally when dog was out of view & away from fenceline (one of the dogs that passed walked along the brick wall out of view, Sarge followed barking down the wall). Some pacing of the yard, trotting across yard with stiffer tail carriage. Exited yard willingly, stopped and briefy thrashed when approaching kennel, would not come forward with leash pressure & verbal coaxing. Reapproach from outside, assistant handler jogged up to the kennel to build momentum, the dog followed and entered the kennel. Allowed unleashing.
5/21/2025 Volunteer asked for assistance returning to kennel as dog was refusing. Walked well back into wing but stopped short of kennel and sat down. Dog was heavy panting and would not take treats. Handler threw treats in kennel and then applied slight leash pressure. K9 stepped back and began thrashing on leash. Handler took dog to yard to decompress while neighboring dogs were locked out for second attempt at return. Dog laid down in yard, continued heavy panting, and would not accept treats. Handler then picked up leash and walked dog into the wing. Walked past kennel, turned around, and dog entered kennel with slight leash pressure. Dog would not take treats from handler, put multiple in kennel for dog.

4/29/2025 Walked onto ramp on leash, wagging tail, wiggly body. Sought attention from officers, allowed vaccines with light restraint, took treats gently and knew how to sit and give paw
12/19/2023 On approach, dog was soft and wiggly. Easy leash placement. Moderate pull to yard. In yard, dog remained soft and explored briefly before engaging with PA's (adult female & teenager daughter). Sat for treats and took them gently. Jumped up on PA's but was corrected with slight leash pressure. Solicited attention from handlers & PA's; allowed all petting. Dog was interested in other dogs passing by yard; standing at fence, tail wagging, barking. Leaving yard, another dog passed by and the dog (Sarge) started barking and attempting to pull towards the dog but was easily redirected when handler walked the opposite direction. Moderate pull back to wing. Dog would not walk back into kennel. Handler stepped in and tossed treats, dog pulled back and would not come forward even with slight leash pressure. Second handler came and the two handlers stepped into kennel and tossed treats; dog followed behind. Easy leash removal.
12/14/2023 Approached from back of kennel. K9 body remained relaxed and neutral and handler opened kennel door, k9 stayed still and allowed for easy leash placement. Came out of kennel easily and mostly ignored barking dogs in wing aside from displaying piloerection with a moderate pull down wing and out of building. On the way out, crossed paths with another walking dog and K9 stayed calm, however, did display piloerection again and pulled slightly toward the other dog, but stopped as soon as the dog was out of sight. Moderate pull continued as we walked, K9 was mostly interested in sniffing during the walk. Handler stopped at a greenbelt for a few moments, during this time, k9 leaned into handler for pets and allowed all handling including ears, mouth, tail and feet and sat for a treat one time. Once back on the property, stopped in a play yard for a few moments, K9 again leaned in for pets once and continued sniffing asnd exploring the play yard. Was not interested in tennis balls. Allowed all handling again (ears, feet, mouth and tail). Moderate pull back to building and down wing. K9 watched the barking dogs as we walked down the wing, but did not pull toward them or bark, did display piloerection again. Initially, k9 did not want to go back into kennel, handler stepped in and k9 came in easier, needing a little bit of verbal coaxing to go in. Once in kennel, k9 allowed leash to be removed and kennel door to be closed without issue.
12/13/2023 didnt solicit attention but soft with handlers and allowed all petting; whined, drooled heavily on ramp, jumped on/off handlers; stop/go in wing, continuing with coaxing. muzzle wrap, medium restraint as precaution
K9 was calm on approach; K9 allowed easy leashing. K9 walked to yard with little to no leash pull. K9 was calm in yard; did not like toys or tennis balls. K9 was calm in yard did not want to explore or walk around the yard ; just stuck by handlers side most of the duration of yard time. K9 walked back to kennel no issues; allowing easy unleashing.
